An epic quest in career development (part 3)

Presenting Quest Buddy - a proof of concept app
2

Welcome back! If you’re new here, please check out parts 1 and 2:

Quest Buddy transforms any activity or goal into engaging quests, allowing users to track their progress, earn badges upon completion, and group related quests for more ambitious achievements. Whether tackling New Zealand's Great Walks or advancing in a career path, Quest Buddy turns milestones into a rewarding adventure.

The main ideas I wanted to explorer in this proof of concept were:

  • Anything can be a quest!

  • Multiple quests can be grouped. This is useful when reaching for reaching higher targets.

  • Completing quests earns you a badge.

The Stealth Innovator Award goes to…

Truth be told, I spent way too much time developing this proof of concept nearly a year ago and didn’t do anything with it. It would need a lot of work to turn into a real product, which might never happen so at the very least I felt it deserved to be shared!

Badges

Badging is an exciting area to me. I look forward to a future where digital badges are more widespread, and deserve to become ubiquitous as a way of demonstrating evidence of skills gained through formal and experiential learning. It could be used for everything from on the job training, to apprenticeships, to university degrees.

You can keep your badges in your digital wallet, and carry them wherever you go. Think of your Apple Wallet - it can store information about your payment cards, your drivers license, or concert tickets. This is based on digital verifiable credentials, a technology that allows secure electronic versions of traditional documents, like passports or qualifications, that can be easily verified online without needing to contact the original issuer.

Let a person dream

One day, any quest you complete could have an associated digital badge, too. And just think, quests could be created and badges gained from all sorts of different issuers:

  • From a learning institution (evidence of qualifications).

  • To an employer (references).

  • A food festival (discounts if you get a badge from at least 3 stalls).

  • To an adventure travel operator (do all the bungy jumps and get 50% off sky-diving!).

This concludes the series on quests in career development, for now anyway. Send me a signal if quests tickle your fancy - the quest for quests is always at the back of my mind, and I’m always keen to connect with like minded questonauts.

Until next time, happy questing!
